GREAT read about Capt Marsh's steamboat career
A GREAT book about the Civil War, Indian Wars, Mississippi/ Missouri River steamboat history as known by Capt Grant Marsh. You'll be surprised how much the army and the west depended on the steamboats as a source of carrying supplies over the shallow rivers before the railroads!Lots of little known Custer battle facts and about the race to evacuate the wounded and Comanche. Great side notes on the page you're reading, but no maps, drawings, or pictures 😮💨.

Grant Marsh, unsung hero.
Not all champions of our history are in uniform. Grant Marsh served with his special knowledge and skills in a capacity that provided vital aid to the military in the west at a most critical time. J. M . Hanson has done us all a wonderful favor by assembling this book. My understanding of the whole Indian campaign has been broadened.

one of the best
Actual history and not a romantic narrative of events during the Indian wars linked to the soldiers’ supply chain via steamboats. If especial interest are soldiers who died and survived the Little Big Horn and traveled with Captain Marsh on his steamboat.

Great local history
I live in Glendive, Montana and Grant Marsh is a part of our history. This book expands on what I knew. There is a small abandon town on the Yellowstone that I spent summers on with his name not far from here. A great read.
